Minnie Lee Harris, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully departed this life on April 4, 2026. She was born on June 5, 1934, in Varnville, South Carolina, to the late Willie and Aline Wright.
Minnie spent much of her childhood in Sumter, South Carolina, where she was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Annie Greene. She attended Lincoln High School in Sumter, where she began forming the strong, compassionate spirit that would define her life.
At the age of 17, Minnie relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where she built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. There, she met and married her devoted husband, Walter Harris Jr., who preceded her in death in 1962.
Minnie was a woman of deep and abiding faith. She joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, later worshipped at Outreach Baptist Church, and faithfully served as a dedicated member and Mother of New Mount Bethel Baptist Church for over 35 years. She was an active servant in the church, chairing various events, singing as a soloist, and leading many choirs throughout Wilmington, Delaware.
Minnie dedicated her life to caring for others, both personally and professionally. She retired from Ingleside Retirement Home and worked as a Senior Companion. Her compassion extended far beyond her work—she was known for giving her last to ensure someone else had what they needed. She truly had a servant’s heart and was a mother to many.
She found joy in singing, traveling back home to South Carolina, spending time with family, and serving her community. Minnie generously gave back by feeding those in need and sponsoring Christmas parties for the Baynard Apartments for over 15 years. She lived her life as a true example of love, kindness, and selflessness.
Minnie leaves to cherish her precious memories with her three daughters: Brenda (“Terry”), Linda (“Daniel”), and Denise. She often spoke proudly of her daughters and grandchildren. She also leaves one brother, Willie Wright Jr. (“Edith”); 10 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
Special acknowledgements are extended to Mildred Dyer, Sylvia Malone, the late Edna and Herman Chamblin, and special friend Robert Watkins.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, James Wright, Robert Wright, and Arthur Wright; and her beloved grandchildren, Pierre Washington and Marquis Coleman.
Minnie Lee Harris will be remembered as a strong, loving, and resilient woman—a lifelong warrior, a faithful servant, a devoted mother, sister, and friend. Her legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering faith will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.
“Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”
