Loretta Jones Bordrick

We gather to celebrate the life and legacy of Loretta Jones Bordrick, who passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2025, at the age of 90.

Born on November 20, 1934, in Delaware, Loretta was the beloved daughter of the late Martha Willis and Benjamin Jones. She was a proud graduate of Howard High School-the first Black high school in Delaware- and continued her education at the Wilmington Skills Center.

Loretta was employed at St. Francis Hospital for over 20 years before retiring in 1999. She was a devoted member of Antioch Church of God in Christ in New Castle, Delaware, where she faithfully served as church secretary. Her faith was unwavering, and she often expressed it by writing heartfelt letters to her grandchildren during church services.

Loretta was an avid reader and writer who found peace and purpose in the written word. She loved to sing hymns. She especially cherished the Christmas season, her favorite song being "Silent Night" by The Temptations. She enjoyed long rides with her pastor and husband, Bishop Charles Scott, and treasured the dear friendships she shared with Etta Robertson and Betty Smiley. She delighted in taking her grandchildren on outings to Linvilla Orchards and often sang sweet lullabies to both her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, wrapping them in comfort and love with her soothing voice. One of her favorite meals was a fried fish sandwich with raw onions, fried potatoes, and stewed tomatoes.

She was a master of home organization and took great pride in creating structure, order, and calm in her surroundings. One of her favorite sayings was, "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day," a reflection of her patience, persistence, and quiet strength.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, the late James Bordrick; her siblings Martha Dixon, Charles Jones, Marion Harris, Dorothy Seagers, Alice Jones, Greta Jones, Mildred Jones-Scott, and Anna Jones; her children Myron Jones, Charlane Jones, and Alonzo Jones; and her grandsons Alfred Jones, Brandon Maddox, and Blaine Delgado.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children: Wayne Dixon (Wanda), Loretta Watson (Alfred), Betty Rae Jones (Robert), Brandon Bordrick (Sicily), Derwin Bordrick (Patricia), and Rozanna (Jackie, deceased); stepchildren Carlos Scott (Melynda) and Gwendolyn Scott; grandchildren Kirk Benson, Reginald Jones, Jelani Jones, Shannon Jones, Aaron Benson, Khary Dixon, Robert Delgado, Shavonne Gibbs, Shalon Bordrick, Lakesha Bordrick, Jamal Maddox, Naomi Aiuto, Dajar Bordrick, Taylor Jones, Mia Jones, Tia Callahan, Kasey Cosden, Jackie Cosden, Sicily Bordrick, Maya Bordrick, and Aurelius Bordrick; and a host of great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Loretta will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her deep and abiding faith, and the legacy of kindness, grace, and strength she leaves behind. Though she lived a quiet and private life, her impact was profound-and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
