Jerome R. "Fudgie" Campbell

December 18, 1950 — August 21, 2025

Jerome R. Campbell, affectionately known as “Fudgie,” was born on December 18, 1950, in Middletown, Delaware, to the late Robert and Shirley M. Campbell. A proud graduate of De La Warr High School, Class of 1968, Jerome was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, and friend to many.

On August 21, 2025, Jerome’s passing came suddenly and unexpectedly, touching the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. His departure is a significant and painful loss to the entire family and the many lives he touched along the way.

Jerome was a man deeply connected to his community, with undeniable style and an unforgettable presence. He served for 20 years at Christiana Care Health Systems, forming lifelong bonds and dedicating himself with commitment and care. A natural entrepreneur, he owned and operated Fudgie’s Variety Store, a neighborhood corner store that became a gathering place and symbol of trust in the community.

If you knew Fudgie, you knew he *loved* his cars—not just liked them. His cars weren’t just transportation; they were a way to express himself. Shiny, bold, and always clean, his favorite Cadillac reflected his personality. A favorite memory for his children is “The Fruit Stand”—a gray Impala loaded with fresh produce, which he used to drive through the neighborhood with his children by his side, selling fruit, sharing laughs, and spreading joy. That image—a proud father behind the wheel, windows down, music playing, fruit in the back, and family all around—lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He was a man of timeless style, known for his collection of sharp hats, suspenders, and flashy shoes that suited him perfectly. And let's not forget his high-pitched voice and contagious laugh. You knew when Fudgie entered the room. He was a passionate supporter of the Wilmington Hornets and cherished his time at the Middletown Camp, where cookouts, card games, and conversations created lasting memories with family and friends.

In November of 2003, Jerome gave his life to Christ and became a devoted member of St. Paul UAME Church. Serving various committees and ministries. One in particular was the Usher’s Board, dedicating over 20 years of service.

Jerome’s greatest pride was his family. He was the devoted father of Darshell Patton, Jerome K. Patton Sr. (Alethea), the late Udana M. Campbell, Quincy S. Campbell (Monique), Shawn Jackson, Jerome Giles (Whitney), and Jasmine Giles. He was a proud grandfather to Shanika Williams, Ashley Barnes, Quaneesha Knotts, Tanissa Britt, Quamere Knotts, Lorraine Barnes, Courtney Carroll, Rashawn Wright, Khiry Clark, Jhania Garner, Nycere Taylor, John Monk, Janih Garner, Jonae Monk, Jerome K. Patton Jr., Jah’keish Demby, Gabrielle Newby, Gary Newby, Shemaur Emory, Major Giles, Kynzlee Campbell, Autumn Giles, and Storm Giles. He also leaves behind 17 cherished great-grandchildren.

Yes, you counted right, that’s 23 grandchildren, and he never missed a milestone moment. From the memories of piling up in his backseat for a treat such as sweet bread or ice cream. To the one- on-one time of him picking out outfits for the boys and jewelry for the girls. Though he gave them all nicknames, there was not one name he didn’t know.

Jerome was a cherished brother to the late Yvonne “Bonnie” Lyles, Darrell Campbell, Elsie Y. Adderley, the late Robert Campbell Jr., Mark Campbell, Saydonyia Venable, Stacey Allen, and Jonathan Campbell. He also helped raise and love four bonus children as his own: Marcollis Bolden (Kimberly), Ian Patton (Chanee), Chrisstie Dennis, and Kelvin Clark. He was deeply loved by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends — including his devoted best friends Kenyatta Warren-Floyd and Edward “Diwani” Massey, whose influence was a steady presence in his life.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirley M. Campbell; grandparents Esther M. Gomez and Aljeo “Hot Shot” Gomez; his siblings Yvonne “Bonnie” Lyles and Robert Campbell Jr.; his beloved daughter Udana M. Campbell; and his nephew Stevie Campbell. He shared life’s journey with the mothers of his children: Marcella Patton, Patricia Campbell, Barbara Jackson, and Linda Giles — all of whom helped shape the undeniable legacy he leaves behind.

More than anything, Jerome loved his family. His home was always open, his heart even more so. Whether you were blood-related or simply loved, he welcomed you as one of his own. His spirit will live on in the lives he touched, the stories we tell, the memories we hold close, and the unmistakable sound of a Cadillac cruising down the block.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
