James A. Hawkins, son of the late Holland Sr. and Ada Hawkins, was born on November 20, 1942, in Somer's Point, New Jersey. He departed this life on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at St Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.
James attended public schools in Queen Anne's County Maryland and graduated from Kennard High School (1960). After graduating James went back to New Jersey and earned his diploma for practical nursing (1964). He worked at Shore Memorial Hospital, then moved to Wilmington, Delaware, and was employed at the Wilmington General Hospital as an LPN. Soon afterward, he was inducted into the military and sent to Vietnam (1965). He was honorably discharged (1967). James held several jobs during his life experiences and received several certificates of achievement. He was employed at Goodwill, Career Exploration Center, West End Neighborhood House, and Bellevue Community Center.
James joined Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized in 1973 under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Ivan N. Collins, Jr. He served on the Administrative - Trustee Board - (40 Plus Years) under the pastoral leadership of four (4) Pastors: Rev. Ivan N. Collins, Jr.; Rev. Herbert J. Owens, Sr. Pastor Emeritus; Rev. Gerald M. Black and current pastor, Rev. Oscar L. Turk, Jr. James served in ministry for many years currently on the Trustee Board & Male Chorus. He was a previous long time member of the Gospel Chorus, the Rock of Ages Mass/Combined Choirs, the Men's Day Choir & the H.J. Owens, Sr. - Senior Choir. James, also, served diligently as a former leader in ministry as the Rock of Ages MBC Church Treasurer; Trustee Board Co-Chair; H. J. Owens, Sr.-Senior Choir Asst. Director/Moderator and Male Chorus President, Director, Secretary & (current - Chaplain). As God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus, James was a faithful, trustworthy and dedicated Servant of God.
James loved his immediate family, church family and friends. His favorite saying was "It Is What It Is!" As a family member, he knew everything about family history. He was our "go-to" guy.
James is preceded in death by his parents, 6 Brothers and 3 Sisters.
James leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Archie Hawkins (Essie) of Egg Harbor Township; one sister, Ada Scott of Wildwood, NJ; a devoted niece/sister Christine J. Tyler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
