James (Jim) Harris Jr., 81, was born in Greenville, Mississippi, on August 6, 1944. Jim transitioned from this life after a lengthy illness. At the time of his passing, he had relocated to Delaware to live with his daughter — the love of his life, his forever baby girl, Shell (Shelle) — who lovingly cared for him. Shell remained faithfully at his side until he took his last breath on January 29, 2026, following a short stay at Delaware Hospice in Milford.
Jim was the only son of the late James Haywood Harris Sr. and Evelyn (Moon) Harris. After his father’s military service, his parents relocated the family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Jim lived for many years, until he was no longer able to live independently.
Jim received his early education in the Philadelphia Public School System, graduating from Bok Technical High School in South Philadelphia. He worked for several companies, including Budweiser, Campbell Soup, and the Philadelphia Refinery, but discovered his true passion in plumbing in 1971. He became a Master Plumber and dedicated himself to mentoring young men in the trade through Plumber’s Local 690.
After becoming a Plumber, Jim 1973, went to work for Willard Construction, focusing on major high-rise projects, including One Liberty Place, which was completed in 1987, and Two Liberty Place, completed in 1990, both located in Center City Philadelphia. He later left the outside elements and went to work at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and its university campus, spending many summers at the Penn Relays until his retirement on March 2, 2006.
An avid traveler, Jim explored the world through his work, with Alaska being his favorite destination, which he visited several times. He enjoyed watching football and boxing, but most of all, he cherished time spent with his family of plumbers, especially Mr. Roger, Mr. Kenny, Mr. Randy. Also, Mr. Jun and the late Mr. Ron who preceded him in death, reunited again, I know they are laughing it up!
Jim was preceded in death by his eldest son, James Haywood Harris II (Jimmy), who passed away at the tender age of 23. I know they are having some heavy conversations, about his journey since leaving this earth so young!
Jim is survived by his loving daughter, Dr. Nishelle Harris-Hines (Paris Sr.); sons, James Damond (Faahkiyr) and Jason Harris; and host of beautiful granddaughters, handsome grandsons, and a great-grand daughter La’HaiVa.
A private ceremony was held in honor of Jim with family. Please continue to keep his family uplifted during this difficult time.
