With profound sadness and enduring love, we announce the passing of Howard Denney Sr., who left this world on September 10, 2025, at the age of 75.
Howard was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, where his life began as a son of the city and a student at Howard High School. A man of quiet strength and enduring work ethic, Howard built a career as a professional driver, a trade that suited his steady nature and sense of purpose.
He was the beloved son of the late Harriett Denney and Leon Williams, and was preceded in death by his brothers Leon Williams and Stefan Williams. He is survived by his brother Marvin Williams, who continues to carry the bond of their shared memories and lifelong brotherhood.
Howard was a father, grandfather, partner, and friend—roles he embraced with deep love and unwavering loyalty. He was the proud father of Darryl Chambers, Howard Denney Jr., Rahim Denney Sr., and the late Stephen Bland, whose memory lives on in the family they raised and loved together.
Howard also shared lifelong bonds with his extended sons—men he loved as his own and who stood by him with unwavering loyalty:
Derrick Chambers, Michael Hackett, and Darius Davis. Though not sons by blood, they were sons by heart.
He was blessed with a growing legacy through his grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy: Howard Denney III and Samuel Denney, sons of Howard Denney Jr. and Sarah Denney, Samara Cathirell, Ananda Chelf, and Rahim Denney Jr., children of Rahim Denney Sr. and Dr. Ackesha Patrick, Dominique Helm, son of Darryl Chambers and Nicole Helm, Denise Thomas, daughter of the late Stephen Bland, Cameron Knott and Aiden Knott, children of Koren Knott, Kendall Ellis Jr. and Kali Ellis, children of Kendall Ellis Sr.
Howard shared part of his life with Elaine A. Forbes, his former wife, and in his later years found loving companionship with Mary Knott Ellis, his significant other at the time of his passing. Their bond brought peace, laughter, and deep affection into his final chapter.
Howard was known not only for his dedication to family, but also for his distinct personal style. A sharp dresser to the core, he was never without a hat, each one as carefully chosen as his suits and shoes. His presence always left an impression—not only in how he looked, but in how he made people feel.
And if you knew Howard, you knew laughter. He had a wicked sense of humor and a natural gift for storytelling. There wasn’t a single conversation where he didn’t say something funny—he had a way of keeping everyone laughing, even in the most unexpected moments. For many, he was the funniest person they ever talked to.
A loyal Baltimore Ravens fan, Howard could often be found enjoying a game, cheering on his team with heart, humor, and that unmistakable spark of pride.
To those who knew him, Howard was a man of few words but deep meaning. He had a calming presence, a gentle heart, and a steady hand. Whether through a ride across town or a quiet moment with family, Howard’s love was shown in his actions—reliable, consistent, and true.
He leaves behind a family knit together by his memory and a community better for his presence. His life was one of humble service, quiet resilience, and lasting impact.
Howard Denney Sr. will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
