Edward Douglas Pitts was born January 16, 1949 in Salem, New Jersey. In 1969 he
married Pamela Brown (former wife) and from that union they had a son Eric. Edward’s
parents Gloria Shorts Pitts and Edward R. Pitts, both predeceased him.
Ed graduated from Penns Grove High School in Penns Grove, New Jersey, and nurtured
a lifelong passion for learning. His intellectual curiosity led him to explore various fields,
including religion, science, astronomy and agriculture.
Ed was particularly drawn to Native American history and culture, especially since some
of his relatives are descendants of the Lenni Lenape and Nanticoke American Indians
from New Jersey and Delaware.
Ed attended Cheyney University (Cheyney, PA), Tuskegee University (AL) and the
University of Delaware, (DE) and was known for his love of reading and thoughtful
debates.
In his younger years, Ed enjoyed photography and biking, hobbies that reflected his
appreciation for nature and detail.
Edward is fondly remembered by his son Eric Pitts, daughter-in-law Meghan Pitts, son
Julian Gillison of Ohio, and several cousins from New Jersey.
