On Monday, June 16, 2025, God sent angels from heaven to claim the soul of one of his children, our beloved Deacon George Thomas Mitchell, Sr.; for his labor of love here on earth was over and his work for the Master was done. It is time for him to rest.
George was born in Colerain, NC on December 3, 1922, to the late Raleigh Lint Mitchell and the late Cora Webb Mitchell. He lived a long and faithful life, marked by steadfast devotion to God, tireless work, and love for his family and community. A man of quiet strength and unwavering integrity, he walked humbly with the Lord every day of his life, guided by faith, scripture, and prayer.
In the summer of 1930, George met the late Louvinia Russell at a church gathering held at St. Johns located in Hartly, DE. They married in 1939 and from this union were born a son George Jr. and a daughter, Loretta Jane both deceased.
He accepted Christ as his personal savior during the early ministry of Elder Ancle Manns. He would often tell the story about when he got saved and accepted Christ as his personal savior. He would say that was one of the greatest things that ever happened to him. He said “he had never had anything like that happen to him”. He said “it was one of the happiest days of his life”. He never wavered away from his faith in God even until the end. He was a praying man and even during his illness he would still pray a powerful prayer. He was an ordained Deacon and was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church for over 75 years, having served under the pastorate of the late Bishop Josephine Jones, the late Elder Arnold Butcher, Elder Constance R. Beach, Bishop Grace Batten, and Elder Deborah Lewis.
During his years at Mt. Olive, he drove the church van and drove family and friends to church in his car, made church repairs, mowed the lawn, removed snow, and visited patients in nursing homes, hospitals, and prisons. He served in various positions, including trustee board chairman, usher board, church secretary and a senior choir member.
George was known for his hard work. He believed that honest work was a way to honor God and serve others, and he instilled those values in everyone around him. He was employed by Diamond Recycling in Wilmington, DE as a welder and started working at the age of fourteen as a flag boy on Governors Printz Boulevard in Wilmington, DE. He was also a skilled burner (using a torch to cut up scrap metals, railroad tracks and tanks). Throughout life, he was an auto and truck mechanic, worked as a skilled crane operator…using his crane to tear down the well-known Wilmington Dry Goods Building in Wilmington, DE, and was self-employed by hauling materials with his dump truck. He and his late wife also worked together for the government hauling materials all over the United States.
In his later years, he often reflected on the blessings of his life: his family, his faith, and the strength God gave him through every season. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
