On January 3, 1941, Carl Michael Lightburn Sr., affectionately known as "Mike," made his
way into the world, born in Belize City, Belize, to the late William Lightburn and Rosita
Moody. He was the youngest of three children born to this union. His brother, James, and
sister, Lois, preceded him in death.
In the spring of 1963, Mike migrated to the U.S. , Brooklyn, New York, to reunite with his
family that migrated earlier, and begin a new chapter in life. Later that year, on November
17, 1963, he married the love of his life, Joyce Longswoth. Together they built a loving home
and were blessed with three children: Carl Jr., Sandra, and Keith.
Mike began his professional career as an accountant with Alexanders, where he worked for
25 years. He was known for his kindness, sense of humor, strong work ethic, faith, and
generosity.
Mike enjoyed playing the saxophone and had a lifelong love of jazz music. In his younger
years, he frequently traveled to the Bronx to play soccer in Van Cortlandt Park. He was an
avid sports fan and a devoted New York Knicks supporter who rarely missed an
opportunity to cheer on his team. He also enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing and was a
proud part owner of his horse, Turn to Gems.
As retirement approached, Mike picked up a paintbrush and discovered a remarkable
natural artistic talent. What began as a hobby blossomed into a passion, his artwork was
displayed at several galleries throughout New York City and Wilmington, Delaware,
including exhibitions at the Empire State Building and the Wilmington Opera House. He
took great pride in sharing his creativity with others through his art.
Above all, Mike was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother,
uncle, and friend. He cherished time spent with family and was admired for his warmth,
wisdom, and unwavering love. His gentle spirit, quiet strength, and sense of humor touched
the lives of all who knew him.
Mike leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Joyce Lightburn; his children, Carl
Lightburn Jr., Sandra Quinones, and Keith Lightburn; his daughters-in-law, Sabrina
Lightburn and Maureen Lightburn; his son-in-law, Rick Quinones; his grandchildren,
Yvonne, Kaila, Kenton, Joseph, and David; his brother, Clinton "Pulu" Lightburn; his sister,
Barbara Thurton and her husband, Colin Thurton; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-
grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends.
Though he will be sorely missed, his love, wisdom, and cherished memories will remain
forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
