Bernard "Bama" Sanders

June 25, 1940 — October 10, 2025

Bernard Sanders, affectionately known as "Bama" was born June 25, 1940, in Montgomery, Alabama the third child of four to the late Virginia Sanders. He peacefully passed away on October 10, 2025.

In his early years he attended public schools in Montgomery, Alabama and as a teenager he moved to Detroit, Michigan. Later he traveled to Wilmington, Delaware to stay with his sister, Irma, and brother-in-law Samuel Alton Harris. On February 14, 1968, he was blessed with his eldest child Carlton Haskins and on September 2, 1975 his brother Jaimin Carter.

Bernard was raised in the Baptist church and baptized as a youth. Throughout his adulthood he attended various churches with his family, and  loved talking about his faith in the Lord.

Bernard was hard working, diligent and dedicated while employed as a truck driver for various trucking companies, Greggo & Ferrara Inc., JB Hunt and Jay Caldwell until he retired. Later in life he was confined to a wheelchair due to a leg injury.

Bernard led an adventurous and incredible life. He was no-nonsense, generous, very caring but confrontational. If you wronged his family, he would be "Johnny on the spot." He was also an avid Eagles fan and enjoyed socializing with his neighbors in his apartment residence.

Bernard was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Sanders; one brother Freddy B. Hill, one sister, Irma Lee Harris, one brother-in-law Samuel Alton Harris and two nephews, Arthur (the Art), Samuel (Chris) Harris and one niece Melinda Thornton.

He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Carlton Haskins North Carolina and Jaimin Carter, Wilmington, DE; his sister Betty (Franklin) Thornton; his niece Rev. Julia (Arnold) Dorman; his special nephew Omar (Denise) Thornton, two grandsons Jaimere Robbins and Jaiden Carter; one grand-daughter, Natiya Tate, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
