Velma Lynn

October 22, 1930 — April 28, 2023

Velma Lynn, age 92, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away peacefully on Friday, April 28, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 22, 1930, in Maryland and reared in Wilmington, Delaware by her parents, the late Joseph and Estelle Morris.  Growing up, Velma attended public schools and spent time working in her family’s dry-cleaning business.  Velma was quite the industrious woman and over the years, she worked in many capacities.  Velma started as a domestic worker, working for many years for the Mazer family of Foley’s Jewelry.

Velma loved to cook and later she used her cooking skills to gain employment with the Wilmington Public school system working in the cafeteria. She later transitioned to working for Wilmington Head Start where she retired after working for many years. Velma was married to the late James Lynn, Jr.

Velma also loved to travel.  Hanging with her lifetime friends, they traveled by train, plane, automobiles, and cruise ships, visiting many islands, going across the US and other neighboring countries.  In her heyday, Velma was a member of the Cozettes, a local social club.  They were known for throwing a mean party and winning all kinds of contests against other social clubs.  Her favorite pastime was going to the casino and playing the nickel slots, not for gain but for pure fun and simple enjoyment.

Velma gave her life to Christ as a young child and for years attended St. Paul UAME church.  Later, when she moved her residence to Ministry of Caring, Sacred Heart Village, Velma joined Prayer & Praise Power Ministries under Reverend Shirley Cofer.  She was most proud of being called one of the church mothers.

Velma was preceded in death by her daughter, Grace Darby, and sons, Maurice Houston, Kevin Morris, and Charles Taylor, and brothers Joseph Jr and Webster.

Velma leaves to cherish her memories, devoted son, Paul N. Morris (Linda), Bernard Lolley, and daughters Mary Patterson and Kathy Miller Wilson (Norman Elliot), and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, devoted daughter-in-law Tracey H. Miller and lifelong girlfriends, Helen Waters and Sandy Taylor.
