Vaughn M. Bond, Sr.

March 23, 1943 — November 17, 2022

Vaughn Melvin Bond, Sr. was born March 23, 1943 in Windsor, North Carolina to Lewis and Icelena

Bond. He received his childhood education in Bertie County, North Carolina and furthered his education by attending North Carolina A&T University and Elizabeth City State University. It was there that he met Althea Blackwell. Initially, Althea was not impressed until she noticed that every time she saw him, he was driving a new car. It was not until they started dating that Althea learned Vaughn was renting those cars to impress her and did not own a car at all! Although disappointed, she remained in the relationship and in 1965 they married. From this union two children were born, Vaughn, Jr. and Beverly.

In 1966 he joined the United States Army where he learned and specialized in heavy vehicle operation. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Vaughn began his career as a professional driver working with the Virginia Transit Authority and later the Trailways Bus Company in Norfolk, Virginia. The opportunity for better employment as a long-distance truck driver with Preston Trucking Company led him to relocate his family to Delaware. He was a dedicated employee for 25 years, who served as a Union Shop Steward and logged over one million miles of safe driving. Vaughn continued his love for long-distance driving by working at Emory Worldwide before finishing his long illustrious career with Eagle Express Transportation in 2018.

Vaughn was a faithful member of Bethel AME Church for 40 years where he served a term as a member of the Trustee Board. His love for driving led him to join the Transportation Ministry where he found great satisfaction in bringing church members, especially the elders, to and from church. His commitment and service to Bethel AME Church led to him being recognized by the Sons of Allen as the Man of the Year.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling to Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach and his hometown of Windsor, NC. He was passionate about his yard; often spending an entire day working to ensure it was well-manicured. There was no question that his yard was the best looking in the neighborhood! He was an avid dog lover who we could always count on to dog sit at a moment’s notice. Most importantly, Vaughn was a compassionate person who cared deeply for others, especially his family. There was not an issue nor a problem that he would not help us to navigate.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Icelena Bond, and Cousin Bertha Outlaw, who was more like a sister.

He leaves to cherish his memory wife Althea (Blackwell) Bond, son Vaughn, Jr. (Darlene), daughter Beverly, granddaughters Jasmine, Jada and Zena and a host of other relatives and friends.
