Oscar F Mitchell

November 13, 1932 — May 1, 2024

Oscar Fry Mitchell, affectionately known as "Mitch," entered the world on November 13, 1932, in Smyrna, Delaware, born to his cherished parents Raliegh L. Mitchell and Cora Mitchell. At 91, he peacefully transitioned from his earthly existence on May 1st, 2024, in Hockessin, Delaware.

A graduate brimming with pride from Delaware State College in Dover, Oscar's path took a patriotic turn when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. Following rigorous basic training at the Quartermaster Training Center in Fort Lee, Virginia, he gallantly served in the Korean War as a driver for the 46th Transportation Truck Company stationed in Inchon, Korea. His unwavering dedication and service to his country were evident in every duty he fulfilled.

Post-military, Oscar transitioned into contributing to road construction with the Laborers' International Union, where his steadfast work ethic and commitment shone brightly. This dedication was further exemplified during his three-decade tenure at Texaco Chemical Co, where he poured his energy into his work until retirement. Retirement didn't dampen his spirit; instead, he redirected his energy into serving the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington for 15 years, showcasing his enduring spirit of giving back.

A former affiliate of the Deliverance House of Praise, Oscar served as a Deacon finding solace and joy in his faith. Beyond his religious duties, he indulged in various hobbies, from nurturing his garden to tinkering and restoring gadgets, and from crabbing to preparing his renowned Collard Greens during festive occasions. His love for Western movies and cherished moments with his family filled his life with boundless happiness and fulfillment.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, Raleigh L. and Cora Mitchell, his bonus mom Essamond Mitchell whom he affectionately called "Sis," mother-in-law Cora E. Munson, sisters Mary Lloyd and Cora Lee Mitchell, and brothers Randolph, William R., Daniel W., and Walter L. Mitchell. His brother-in-law Issac Hinson also preceded him.

However, his legacy lives on through his loving wife Doris L. Mitchell, his children Carol Watson, Oscar "Skeeter" Henry, Don Hinson, Lendora Hinson, Tu’Myria Hinson, and Yontal Hinson, his sisters Sarah Jane Shockley, Elizabeth "Liz" Mitchell, Dr. Beulah “Bebe” Mitchell, Joan G. Mitchell, and Barbara Mitchell Williams (Henry), his brothers George Mitchell and Eugene Mitchell, his sisters-in-law Delores Hinson, and Betty S. Mitchell as well as his 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Oscar’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him. His life reminds us of the importance of resilience, faith, and cherishing moments with loved ones. Though he may be gone, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
