Harold W. Pendergrass

Harold Pendergrass was born in Chester, South Carolina to father Alco Pendergrass and mother Annie Belle Foote-Carter-Pendergrass. He was educated at Finley School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Harold worked on the family farm, but aspired to leave South Carolina to explore his dreams of being an independent business man. After graduating high school he decided to join the Marines and it was there his barbering skills were mastered. After being honorably discharged, Harold moved to New Castle, Delaware and briefly stayed with his dear late aunt Ocie Foote-Miller until he established a spot of his own. Subsequently he accomplished his goal of setting up shop in Delaware for the rest of his life.

As destiny would have it, Mr. Pendergrass had five children; but preceding his death was his parents, his only brother Thomas Carter, Jr. of South Carolina, beloved stepfather Joe C. Pendergrass of South Carolina, three sons Raymond Michael Carter of Chester, South Carolina, Harold Pendergrass, Jr. and Omar Pendergrass and his ex-wife and friend whom he adored to the end, Ms. Ernestine Pendergrass.

Pendergrass was a handsome, fearless, hardworking man. He was stubborn, preferring no assistance or handouts. He did everything on his own. He was gonna make it happen his way and on his own terms and nothing could convince him otherwise! And since he was a licensed master barber in the Wilmington demographic for over 50+ years, he gained renown respect from the neighboring businesses. As far as his past, the word on the street and rehearsals of ‘grass’s history from our elders is quite colorful. He had street ‘cred’ and was known for his tasteful lifestyle and Cadillacs. He frequented states known for traffic like New York, D.C. and Pennsylvania. I’m told by everyone he was THAT GUY!

Even at 87 years old he had a diverse clientele looking for cuts! He also wanted his sons to barber alongside him so he taught them barbering skills as well. Periodically Joey and Omar did work alongside their father. Man he will certainly be missed!

Harold was fondly "so called" Mr. P, 'Grass, Pops, Smiley and Pendergrass by family and friends.

He leaves behind a strong posterity tree to continue his great legacy. Here now left to cherish their father's memories and integrity are: Christine Pendergrass-Dollard (Richard) and Joey Pendergrass (Candace); grandchildren Raymond (many children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren), Harold, Jr. (Harold Hall, III, Corey Pendergrass and Sabrina Hall), Christine (Chrissy Pendergrass-Pierre, Allen Bryant, Jr. and Themis Bryant), Joey Pendergrass (Branden Pendergrass) and Omar Pendergrass (Nakia Jones, Omar Pendergrass, Jr. and Alexis Gonzalez); great-grandchildren: Harold Hall, IV and Harold Hall, V, Lyaire Hall, Sadayah Hall, Corie Ann Pendergrass, Ritzy Curry, Chrislyn Pierre, Jamar Callahan, London Bryant, Aaron Bryant, Daya Jones, Meena Jones, Churon Smith, Oniya Pendergrass, Romel Chapman, Franchesca Pritchett and Omar Pendergrass, III; and a host of friends, nieces and nephews.
