Carlton Livingston

March 25, 1945 — March 23, 2023

Carlton Livingston was born on March 25, 1945, in Kingston, Jamaica to the late Thaddeus Livingston and Edith Paddyfoot.  He transitioned on March 23, 2023, at Christiana Care in Newark, Delaware.

He attended Chetolah Park Primary School and Kingston Senior School in Jamaica before migrating to the United States in March 1966.  He attended Howard High School, Wilmington, Delaware and graduated in 1968.  Mary Black was his soulmate and the wife of his heart who he met in 1966 and married on May 4, 1968.  They were married for 55 years and from their union they had two sons, Derrick and Dennis.

Carlton started working for Red Star Flooring & Tile Company in 1968 and moved on to Chrysler Corporation until he retired.  He built his retirement home in Jamaica, and became an entrepreneur managing his brother, Neville O’Reilly Livingston’s (aka Bunny Wailer) music career and various real estate developments.

To his friends in Jamaica, he was a “Mr. Fix It” and a generous man to the less fortunate who came seeking help.  It is said that he paid for a lot of funerals in Jamaica and that the majority of males were buried in suits from his personal closet.  As he said, “one size fits all.”  He was a lifetime member of the Wilmington West Indies Association.  They sponsored activities (recreational and social) designed to celebrate Caribbean heritage. He enjoyed horse racing, and his favorite pastime was playing dominoes and Solitaire.

Carl was known as the “General” in the Livingston family.  His kindness extended to his children, his grandchildren, his siblings, his family members, and his friends and their families.  Whether it was a house party or social event at his home in Delaware or providing a ride, a place to stay, or relaxation time at his house in Red Hills, Jamaica, he was always accommodating and lovingly known as Carl and Boswell.

Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, his brother Neville Livingston and his grandson.

To cherish his memory, Carl leaves behind his faithful wife Mary, their two sons Derrick and Dennis (Jeanette) and his daughter Roxanne, 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 10 sisters Claire, Shirley, Thelma (Tony), Monica Robb, Vinette, Carol, Rose, Claudette, Evelyn (Delroy), and Sheila, brother Donovan Livingston, and sisters-in-law Margaret (Sherman) and Barbara.  A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a loving extended family, and friends will treasure the memory of Carlton.
